The Mohawk

The Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca tribes make up the original "Five Nations" of the Iroquois.

These tribes were divided into clans. The Mohawk clans are the Turtle, Wolf and Bear clans. The Mohawk people call themselves "Kanienkehaka" which means "people of the flint."

The Mohawk live in New York state.

The Mohawk people grew gardens of corn, beans and squash.

Some hunting of small game animals and fishing also provided food for the village.

Birchbark canoes were used for fishing and traveling on the rivers of the Northeast.
